Coaxial connectors for RF applications
Coaxial connectors provide defined, low-loss interfaces between printed circuit boards, microwave assemblies, enclosures and RF cables. As such, RF connectors influence the impedance matching, insertion loss and signal integrity of the entire RF assembly and must therefore be suited for the frequency range, the PCB structure and the mechanical installation conditions.
We supply coaxial and RF connectors by Frontlynk for connecting flat-panel assemblies, RF modules and microwave housings, as well as for the manufacture of high-quality coaxial cables and cable assemblies.
What types of RF connectors are available?
The product range comprises various connector series and designs from DC to 110GHz. These include, amongst others:
-
SMA, SMB, SSMB, MCX and MMCX
-
N, BNC and TNC connectors
-
SMP, SMPM and SMP3
-
Precision interfaces with 3.5mm, 2.92mm, 2.4mm, 1.85mm and 1.0mm
-
End-launch, printed circuit board and housing connectors
-
Connectors for flexible and semi-rigid coaxial cables
The precision interfaces for RF applications cover different frequency ranges depending on the size. Frontlynk, for example, offers 2.92mm versions up to 40GHz, 2.4mm connectors up to 50GHz, 1.85mm versions up to 67GHz and 1.0mm connectors up to 110GHz. Most connectors are designed for a system impedance of 50 ohms.
How do you choose the right coaxial connector?
The following characteristics are particularly relevant when selecting connectors:
-
Maximum frequency range
-
Insertion loss and reflection characteristics
-
Connector and contact type
-
PCB or housing mounting
-
Number of connection cycles
-
Compatibility with cable, PCB and measurement system
A carefully designed interface reduces reflections and undesirable parasitic effects. This is particularly important in microwave and millimetre-wave applications, as even minor deviations in the layout or assembly can significantly affect the electrical characteristics.
RF connectors for PCB interconnection
THT, SMD/SMT and end-launch connectors are available for RF interconnection of printed circuit boards. THT versions offer high mechanical stability, whilst SMD connectors enable compact solutions suitable for automated assembly. End-launch connectors route the RF signal directly from the edge of the printed circuit board to the trace.
SMP connectors are particularly suitable for compact board-to-board and module-to-board connections. Frontlynk offers corresponding solutions ranging from SMP up to 40GHz, SMPM up to 65GHz and SMP3 up to 100GHz, as well as end-launch versions up to 110GHz.
