Noise sources: Waveguide and coaxial
Noise sources are sources that generate a defined and uniform noise across a specific frequency spectrum.
They are used as a reference signal to precisely determine the intrinsic noise and sensitivity of RF components such as amplifiers or receivers.
With the aid of noise sources, the noise figure of low-noise preamplifiers can be determined metrologically.
Waveguide noise sources
As a system integrator for noise parameter and noise measurement systems, we recommend the waveguide noise sources by Virginia Diodes with a waveguide bandwidth up to 400GHz. Some VDI waveguide noise sources feature built-in waveguide isolators, which optimise the matching between the noise source and the DUT. We are available to provide personalised advice on waveguide noise sources and other components.
Coaxial noise sources
Coaxial noise sources are usually supplied without an isolator so that they can be offered as universal sources with the widest possible bandwidth (a broadband isolator limits the usable bandwidth to approximately one octave).
Applications for these include measuring the noise figure using the Y-method (hot/cold) and calibrating a noise parameter test bench with a tuner. For coaxial noise sources, we recommend products by Keysight Technologies.
