RF detectors for power, level and signal measurements

In RF measurement technology, a detector is a component that converts the high-frequency alternating voltage of an RF signal into a proportional direct current (DC) voltage. Its primary function is to measure the power or amplitude of an RF signal by rectifying and smoothing the rapid RF oscillation.

RF detectors are primarily used in power meters, for level monitoring in test setups, or for the demodulation of amplitude-modulated (AM) signals. Depending on the measurement task, solutions are available for coaxial signal detection ranging from the RF to the millimetre-wave range, as well as for waveguide-based measurements above 100GHz.

Coaxial RF Detectors by Keysight

Keysight offers broadband diode detectors specifically designed for use in RF and microwave measurement systems. Depending on the model, the low-barrier Schottky detectors cover frequencies up to 26.5GHz. They require no external DC bias and are used, for example, for CW and pulsed power detection, the levelling of signal sources and frequency response measurements.

For higher frequencies, the Keysight 8474B/C/E planar-doped-barrier diode detectors are available. Depending on the model, the series operates up to 50GHz. The PDB technology used offers high broadband flatness, good temperature stability and a defined square-law response, making it suitable for precise microwave measurement setups.

RF and millimetre-wave detectors from Talent Microwave

Talent Microwave offers both coaxial detectors and waveguide detectors for RF, microwave and millimetre-wave applications. The coaxial TPSD detectors cover various frequency ranges from 10MHz to 110GHz. For the higher frequency ranges, 1.85mm and 1.0mm connectors, amongst others, are used. The output signal is provided as a DC signal for further measurement or analysis.

For measurements in the millimetre-wave range, Talent offers waveguide detectors. Such waveguide detectors are suitable for signal detection in test set-ups where waveguides are used as the transmission medium at very high frequencies.

We also supply high-quality waveguide detectors from Virginia Diodes (VDI).
