Waveguide adaptors for precision RF measurement technology

Waveguides and components

Waveguides are used in RF measurement technology when coaxial connections reach their technical limits. They are characterised by significantly lower attenuation losses.

Technically, waveguides consist of conductive walls, but without an internal conductor and usually without a solid dielectric. The interior is usually filled with air or a vacuum. This allows significantly higher RF power levels to be transmitted.

Waveguides are usually rigid in construction and therefore offer high mechanical stability.

When are waveguides used?

Waveguides are used, for example, in S-parameter measurements, frequency-extended VNA systems, power measurements, detection, radar/SatCom applications and in semiconductor characterisation.

Typical components include waveguide adaptors, attenuators, couplers, detectors, calibration kits, interconnects and antennas. Further components, such as noise sources, are listed on the RF components page.

To ensure reproducible measurement results, it is not only the choice of the right component that is crucial, but also the correct design of the entire measurement setup. We can assist with the selection of suitable waveguides and coaxial-to-waveguide adaptors for your specific measurement setup – from individual components right through to integration into complex RF, mmWave and THz test systems.

Reliably coupling coaxial RF signals to waveguides

The transmission of coaxial RF signals to waveguides – and vice versa – is becoming increasingly important in high-frequency measurement technology. With rising frequencies, wider-band signals and higher demands on signal integrity, precise coupling between different interfaces is becoming a decisive factor.
